MEMBERS of Pembroke Town Council are united in their opposition to Pembrokeshire County Council's proposals to close Pembroke library and Tourist Information Centre (TIC) as part of a cost-saving exercise.
Unless an alternative funding source can be found, proposals to be discussed at the county council's Cabinet meeting in June are likely to recommend the closure of the town's library and TIC to be replaced with a mobile library service.
Town councillors who have set up a sub-committee to fight the proposal stated: "Whilst fully appreciating the savings that the county council need to make, it would be a very short sighted decision for the county council to close these vital community services in Pembroke.
“Libraries play an essential role in community life, whilst the TIC is an extremely important service for visitors to the town. The costs of running both services is in the region of £30,000 per annum which is hardly a significant cost saving given its importance to residents and visitors alike. We would hope that all residents of the town will be united in their opposition to these proposals."
A public meeting is to be held at Pembroke Town Hall on Wednesday evening, March 21, from 7pm, where the views of local residents will be sought on the proposals.
A drop in session will be available prior to the meeting, starting at 4pm for those who cannot make the evening.
A petition opposing the plans is being prepared and will be available to sign in the town hall, as well as various businesses in the town.
