FISHGUARD'S Transition Café is cooking up some tasty ideas thanks to funding from the Sainsbury's Waste less, Save more scheme.

Transition Café, in Fishguard High Street, serves good value homemade meal, snacks and drinks from Tuesday to Friday. Staff and volunteers also make preserves with gluts of fruit and vegetables, provide catering for events and provide advice about how to reduce food waste.

They serve 9000 customers at Transition cafe every year and process 11 tonnes of surplus food.

In collaboration with Pembrokeshire County Council, Transition Bro Gwaun (TBG) has successfully secured funding for a year to support groups, businesses and individuals make the most of their food through using surplus and reducing waste.

TGB has used the Sainsbury's funding, together with European Leader funding, to create the Make a Meal of It project. For more information see http://transitionbrogwaun.org.uk/make-a-meal-of-it.

So far the project has been advising community groups in Pembrokeshire about setting up community fridges and helping to integrate food waste reduction into organisations' daily procedures and policies.

It has also delivered cookery workshops with a variety of different groups from family and toddler groups to retirees, as well as attending events and festivals around the county to give talks and demonstrations about reducing food waste.

The organisation will also be working with a local primary school on a pilot project to reduce food waste in the canteen and raise awareness of surplus food with pupils.

Transition Bro Gwaun is currently recruiting for a new member of staff to join the Make a Meal of It project through the Change Agents website https://jobs.changeagents.org.uk/vacancy/4d06-food-saver-champion.

There is a job description on the Change Agents website and on Transition Bro Gwaun's website.
