A project to improve an abandoned quarry in Haverfordwest is one of the latest to benefit from the 5p plastic bag charge, but the amount of funding it will receive depends on the result of a local public vote.
The Portfield Gate Community Woodland project now needs your vote to secure the maximum funding available from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, in order to continue the work that has been taking place at the site over the past two years.
People visiting Tesco stores in Pembrokeshire will be able to vote for the project between Saturday, February 27 and Sunday, March 6.
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority Discovery Ranger, Tom Moses said: “More than 40 groups and 500 individuals have helped improve this neglected site so far. They have opened up the woods and made them accessible to all.
“This new funding will allow people to enjoy a wider much range of activities at the site which is a hidden gem. We now want to encourage more people from Haverfordwest and across the county to enjoy this place, which is right on the doorstep of the county town and in the heart of Pembrokeshire.
“Although the basic £8,000 funding will help us make a range of improvements, coming top of the public vote will give us £12,000, which will allow us to develop some truly amazing activities. We need your support so please cast your vote if you visit a store!”
The funding will go towards a range of improvements including a further 100 metres of footpaths, the construction of a boardwalk pond-dipping area and the addition of a fire pit with group seating and outdoor cooking area.
