THE work of two Pembrokeshire artists will feature in the UK’s top contemporary glass showcase later this month.
Linda Norris from Maenclochog and Ashraf Hanna from Keeston are among 76 British artists who have been announced as finalists for the British Glass Biennale.
The Biennale is now in its sixth year, and is a highlight of the International Festival of Glass, which runs from May 28 to June 28 in Stourbridge. A total of 122 pieces will be exhibited, embracing a range of glass making techniques including blown, kiln formed, slumped and engraved glass with pure clean crystal through to opaque vessels and pieces featuring surface painting and glass inclusions.
Linda Norris has an engraved piece selected for the exhibition. She is a painter who has been working in glass for seven years and has won several major glass competitions. Linda is currently developing her work as part of her residency ‘ob serve’ which is supported by the Arts Council for Wales. Linda said: “We are all delighted to have our work selected for the British Glass Biennale, and to be representing Wales in this national competition.”
Ashraf Hanna has two cast glass works in the exhibition. In 2013, he was awarded a Creative Wales Award to develop his practice in ceramics and to pursue his interest in kiln cast glass.
As well as securing a coveted slot at the acclaimed Biennale, Linda and Ashraf will be vying for one of several awards. The headline award is the British Glass Biennale Prize, which is selected by the jury and is recognised as one of the most prestigious awards in the world of glass The winners will be announced on May 27.
