I write fully endorsing the sentiments of Malcolm Stacey (Letters 5/10).
My wife and I run the West Wales R'n'R Club which holds its dances on the 3rd Friday of each month at Whitland Social Club (Dairy Club).
Since moving to this lovely part of Wales 10 years ago, we have searched high and low for good venues to run the club from and sadly they all seem to be closing one by one - we have been housed at 7 different venues in that time. The homes of R'n'R clubs in the towns and cities across the UK have tended to be Social Clubs and Working Mens's Clubs but these are gradually falling into disrepair. Business closures, lack of funds and lack of support of the communities surrounding them has ultimately led to their demise.
Venues with a good dance floor are few and far between and the loss of the De Valance was a big blow. We are very fortunate in the fact that we have been established at Whitland for about 3 years and have built up a very well supported club which allows us to bring some of the top bands (Jets, Firebirds etc) to this quiet corner of Wales and also to give significant sums to charities both locally and nationally.
Details can be obtained on our website www.westwalesrocknrollclub.webs.com or phone 01994 453220 There is a thriving club in Haverfordwest which is also having trouble with locating a regular venue.
So Malcolm - please don't become despondent! Stick at it and it will come good - ours has taken 10 years!
Keep rockin'
