Pembroke Dock
There was a large gathering at the funeral of Mr Les James of 3 Hill Street Pembroke Dock, who died at Withybush Hospital on May the 23rd, aged 79.
Born in Llanfallteg, one of five children, Les worked from the age of 14 for the Great Western Railway, based first at Clunderwen, then later for British Rail at Whitland and Pembroke Dock; finishing his railway career as goods guard in Llanelli.
In 1972, he moved to Pembroke Dock with his wife, Brenda, a native of Pembroke Dock. Les started work at Pembroke power station where he was employed until 1979. Les then started work for Dyfed County Council as a toll collector on the Cleddau Bridge, gaining promotion to toll bridge inspector. He retired in 1994.
Les met Brenda in 1955, when he was transferred to Pembroke Dock with British Rail; Les and Brenda married in 1957 and made their home in Llanelli. They had one son, Owen.
They moved to the family home in Hill Street, Pembroke Dock in 1973. Les, a keen first aider, was an active member of St John Ambulance for more than 40 years as a divisional officer and serving brother. Along with his wife, Les raised several thousand pounds, organising dances and various other fundraising activities.
For 25 years, Les and Brenda organised the blood donor sessions at Pembroke power station and also covered the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock area.
Keen gardeners, Les and Brenda were members of the Pembroke Dock Begonia and Fuchsia Society. They also enjoyed nothing more than exploring west Wales in their camper van and were annual participants on the Pembrokeshire Vintage Rally.
Les was a prestigious athlete, and won the Cyprus Cross County Race on two occasions while stationed there during his National Service. He was formerly a member of the Pembroke Dock Bowling Club, and more recently a member of Lamphey Short Mat Bowls Club, where he played regularly until illness prevented him from doing so.
The family left to mourn are: Brenda (wife): Owen and Samantha (son and daughter-in-law); Abigail, Daniel, Joshua and Zoë (grandchildren); Doreen (sister); Brynmor and Hywel (brothers); Wallace (brother-in-law) and many nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention.
The funeral took place on Friday, May 30th at St John's Church, Pembroke Dock, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium. The funeral service was officiated by Curate Thelma Barber. Brian Hall (family friend) read a eulogy.
The bearers were Chris Cousins and Nigel Lewis (St. John Ambulance) and Stewart Treharne and Paul Hay (friends). A guard of honour was formed by Pembrokeshire members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
There were immediate family flowers only, with donations in lieu for either ward ten, Withybush Hospital or RNLI (Angle Lifeboat) to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Son, 31 Stockwell Road, Pembroke Dock.
Mr E. J. Hatton
Newport
EDWARD John Hatton, known as Ted, died at his home in Maes y Cnwce, Newport, on the May 14th. He was 84.
He had not enjoyed the best of health in recent years, but he remained active and enjoyed travelling locally.
A native of Bethnal Green, London, he was a war veteran who saw active service in Italy and the North Africa campaign.
He moved to the area with his wife Glenys, who was originally from Newport, after they both retired. He was predeceased by Glenys five years ago.
The family left to mourn were: Sheila and Brian Eyles (daughter and son -in-law); Ieuan and Jane, Mark and Sharon (grandsons and wives); Gill (granddaughter); Gareth, Sian, Danielle, Sophie, Stacey (great grandchildren) Vikki and Carl (great granddaughter and fiancé); Gordon and Beck (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), together with nephews, nieces and friends too numerous to mention.
Unable to attend were: Barry, Mel, Ross, Bryn, Bethan, Rogon (grandson and family in Canada); Sam, Darren, Donna, Mia and Andy (Gill's husband).
The funeral took place at Bethlehem chapel on May 22nd, with interment at Brynhyfryd cemetery. Rev Alwyn Daniels officiated and the organist was Jean Young.
The bearers were Vivian Williams, Martin Thomas, John Rowe Lewis, Hugh Thomas, Dylan Roberts and Rhys Thomas.
There were family flowers only, with donations for Leukaemia Research to Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
Mrs L. M. A. Phillips
Ambleston
The death occurred on May 23rd of Lizzie Margaret Annie Phillips (known as Betty), of Rinaston Farm, Ambleston, Haverfordwest, who died after a short stay at Withybush Hospital. She was 91.
Originally from Prendergast, she spent her whole life poultry and dairy farming.
She enjoyed flowers and gardening and was a member of St Dogwells Church, an active member of many committees, past member and president of Fishguard Show and also a member of South Wales Friesian Club.
She was predeceased by her husband Ronnie Phillips in 1966 and her sister Nellie in 2001.
The family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Edward and Sally (brother and sister-in-law); John (nephew); Margaret (niece-in-law); Elaine, Eleri, Catrin and Nia (great nieces); Ronnie and Ann; Helen and Sally.
The funeral service was held at St Dogwells Church and Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev David Rees, Canon Evans, Canon Gwyther and Rev Geoffrey Eynon. The organist was Anita Smith and the bearers were Tony Cuff, Clifford Reynolds, David Raymond and Mark John.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by F. G. Rees and Sons, Haverfordwest.
Mrs B. E. M. Havard
Haverfordwest
The funeral took place on May 21st of Brenda Edna May Harvard (nee Picton) of South Court, Haverford-west, who died on May 15th after a long stay at Withybush hospital.
Originally from Rosemarket, she left school at 14 and worked on a farm in Steynton. She held various jobs in Haverfordwest including working at Woolworths and finally ending up working for Dyfed Cleaners Services as shop manager.
She enjoyed watching sports especially football. She enjoyed a good laugh and joke, and would always be willing to do anything for anyone.
Predeceased by her husband Mal Havard, the family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Phyllis Picton (sister); Joan and Geoffrey (sister and brother-in-law); Andrew and Sarah (nephew and his wife and family); Mark and Julie (nephew and wife and family); Martin, Alan, Paul and Tony and their families; Grenville and Dougy (cousins) and their families, plus close relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Mark and Julie (nephew and wife and family).
The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and officiated by Canon G. Gwyther, followed by interment at St Ishmaels Church, Rosemarket, officiated by Rev D. Lloyd. The bearers were Grenville Gale, Dougy Gale, Rhys Havard and George Davies.
There were close family flowers only with donations in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Society.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.
Mrs M. J. Magill
Milford Haven
The death occurred of Margaret Joan Magill (nee Rainer) on April 14th at Withybush Hospital. She was 80.
Joan, as she was known by everyone, was born and bred in Milford Haven. As a young woman she worked in the mining depot and Flax Factory before moving away to Wantage where she met and married Gerald. Her life revolved around her family.
The family left to mourn are: Gerald (husband); Geraldine (daughter); Geraint (son-in-law); Sioned (granddaughter); Tommy and Mary (nephew and niece).
The funeral service was held at the Baptist Church, North Road, Milford Haven, and was officiated by Rev Paul Bartlett.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Whitland
Last week's obituary of Peggy Hector of Croft Cottage, Whitland should have read Miss P. A. Hector rather than Mrs P. A. Hector.

Mrs C. R. Hall
Rosemarket
The death occurred on May 26th of Cheryl Hall, of Halls Nook, Rosemarket. She was 60.
Known as Cherry, she was the youngest daughter of Laura Adams and was born in Burton, where she spent her youth.
She married Bob at the age of 21 and moved to Bicester. After her two children, Sarah and Zoe, left home. she wanted to return to the county, and moved back to live in Rosemarket near her mother.
Unfortunately ill health over the later years prevented her from doing the things she wished to do, but she was content to enjoy her garden and be with her pets.
The funeral took place on Friday, May 26th, at St Ishmaels Church, Rosemarket, followed by interment at Rosemarket cemetery. Father Graham Lloyd officiated.

The bearers were Richard Davidson, Michael and Tristan Otterbien (nephews) and Rob Hancox (friend).

Mrs W. M. Wheeler
Pembroke
Winifred Mary Wheeler, of 15 Jogram Avenue, Pembroke, died on May 23rd, aged 84. At the time of her death, she was at the home of her daughter Pauline, in Hundleton.
Affectionately known as Winnie, she was born in Chapel Hill, Hundleton, and was one of nine children of the late Mary and Harry Davies.
Winnie met and married her husband Billy in 1946, who died 12 years ago, Winnie and Billy will be best remembered as landlords of the Victoria Inn, in Monkton, which they ran for many years before retiring.
Winnie leaves to mourn: Pauline and Martin (daughter and son-in-law); Ken and Joan, Haydn and Heather, Keith and Georgina (sons and daughters in law); Alan (grandson); Peter and Cindy, Adrian and Tracey, Jason and Nicky, Paul and Tina (grandsons and wives); Kelly and Dean, Nina and Neil (granddaughters and partners); Nicola and Alister (granddaughter and husband); Paula, Chloe (granddaughters); Wes and Penny (grandson and partner); Craig, Liam, Ryan, Emeir, Lauren, Tom, Jessica, Ellie, Madeline, Ryan, Alex, Aaron, Cerys and Seren (great grandchildren); Brian and Ann, Lyn and Nancy (brothers and sisters-in-law); Betty and Dennis; Gillian and George (sisters and brothers-in-law); Josie and Margaret (sisters); Marje (sister-in-law); Howard (brother-in-law), together with nephews, nieces, and many family friends too numerous to mention.
A large gathering of family and friends attended the funeral service, which took place at Monkton Priory Church on May 29th. Rev Martin Cox officiated and the lesson was read by Rev Andrew Davies. Ronnie Gwyther, lay reader, also took part. Interment followed at Monkton cemetery.
The bearers were Alan and Peter Dando, Ken, Jason and Paul Wheeler and Nigel Davies.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Neil Roberts.
Mr G. Rogers
Pembroke Dock (formerly of Neyland)
The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on May 18th of Gwyn Rogers, of Connacht Way, Pembroke Dock. He was 61.
Before taking over the New Star ironmongers and locksmiths in Neyland, Gwyn was a PE teacher in Milford Haven Central School and a class teacher in Hubberston Junior School.
While teaching, Gwyn often organised extracurricular activities such as sailing, rugby and athletics. He later ran a gymnastics club with his wife Ann and friend Lesley Cocking.
He was also involved with the highly successful Neyland Disco Dancers, spending many weekends travelling to competitions.
Since running the ironmongers he had returned to pursuing his own interests of walking, cycling and sailing.
The principal mourners are: Ann Rogers (wife); Sian and Jason (daughter and son-in-law); Chris and Jen (son and daughter-in-law); Isaac and Nia (grandchildren); Renee (mother); Margaret and Jonathan (sister and brother-in-law) together with many other family members and friends.
The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was officiated by Rev Martyn Evans. The bearers were Philip Edwards, Michael Griffiths, Jonathan Mayhew and Andrew Syme.
Tony Organ presented an eulogy at the service, paying tribute to the voluntary work Gwyn did with the children in Neyland and the service he offered in the ironmongers, which recently closed.
